Relocation Luxembourg
General Information:
The Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg is located on the boundaries of 3 countries: France, Belgium, and Germany. Due to its international orientation, the country, and especially the capital, attracts many expatriates. In every day life and also at work, French, English and German are all common languages.
Expatriates:
In general, expatriates choose Luxembourg City to relocate in the Grand-Duchy as the capital is not only the cultural centre but also the political and economic centre of the country. As Luxembourg attracts many expatriates, the supply of furnished apartments is limited. Nevertheless, it is still possible to find a suitable accommodation for an expatriate and his/her family.
Culture:
Luxembourg City was named the capital of culture in 2007, and today its historical downtown is classified as a UNESCO's World Heritage Site. An example of this European cultural patrimony is the Vauban city where Dutch paintings from the XVIIth century may be seen.
Economy:
Luxembourg has the highest GPD per capita in the world. Its economy is based on the tertiary sector. The capital is one of the main financial sites of the world and is also the seat of several institutions and agencies of the European Union. This is why many people decide to work there, even those who live nearby, in one of the border countries.
Education:
Every family with children working in Luxembourg may apply for family and parental allowances, even if they are not citizens of Luxembourg. During the whole schooling period, there is an emphasis on a trilingual education. The only international schools are in Luxembourg City. Whatever the age and origins of the child, we will put you in touch with the French High-School of Luxembourg, the international school St. Georges, the international school of Luxembourg or the European school of Luxembourg.
Housing:
As Luxembourg is located on the border of the three countries "Saar-Lor-Lux", you may travel very quickly to Germany, Belgium or France. Rent has increased significantly in the past few years and this is why employees often decide to settle in a neighbouring country and commute back and forth every day. Sometimes, the employers tolerate this solution in order to avoid losing qualified employees.
Rent price trends in Paris and Berlin
Rent prices in both European cities have increased by an average of around 7% in the last 12 months. However, this increase hardly reveals anything about the actual rental market situation as the trends in the capitals of both neighbouring countries could not be more different.
